Isquint.com is a free iPod encoder for Mac These days there are some wonderful videos available on YouTube. Last month I showed you how to convert them to your iPod using Windows. Since then I have received several queries from readers wanting to know how this could be done on a Mac. The Mac is one of the best machines around to handle jobs like these. Getting YouTube videos on to an iPod is a breeze with the Mac browser, Safari. YouTube does not make it easy for you to save its videos, let alone download them to an iPod. All its videos are converted to a Flash format with a.flv extension.

Till recently there were very few encoding programs that would accept this format. Then there was the challenge of converting them so that the iPod could play it. With a Mac you can handle the downloading and encoding of the YouTube video easily. Launch Safari and go to www.youtube.com and play the video that you want transferred to your iPod.

Next, open the Activity window. You will find several items starting with ‘Double click on the file that has “getvideo?videoid=” in the line. This will save the file to your default location on your Mac. Now you have to convert this downloaded file so that the iPod can play it. A good, free iPod encoder for Mac is available from www.isquint.com. Drag and drop the downloaded video file into the application.

Choose Optimise for iPod, and iSquint will encode the video so that it fits the iPod screen. If you want to watch the video on your TV using the iPod’s TV output port, choose Optimise for TV. You can use this program and the Mac to put videos taken with a mobile phone onto your iPod too.

I have seen that many YouTube videos come out immensely clearer when they are transported to a phone or an iPod. There is a second option available to Mac users as well as Windows users. You can make this conversion online at www.vixy.net. Just paste the url of the YouTube video and choose a format and click Start. There is an MP3 option too, which enables you to save just the music or song from a video. Modem Scripts for a Mac Most software that comes with your mobile phone is compatible only with Windows.

I got the shock of my life when I was told that my brand new Sony Ericsson phone would not work with my gleaming white Macbook. The Sony Ericsson service desk told me that there was no software for the Mac and I could never connect to the Internet using my mobile phone with the Macbook. However, with a Mac you are never at a loss. In a few minutes I was up and browsing happily using the phone and my Macbook. And the Bluetooth connection was really fast.

The Mac comes with a few standard modem scripts. If you do not find yours, just go to Ross Barkman’s Home Page at and download the script for your cell phone, PDA or Blackberry. These scripts work with mobile phones connected over Bluetooth, infrared or USB-serial cables. They activate a GPRS connection by dialling a dummy number such as.99.1# of.99#. On a Mac, using these scripts you do not have to dial this number.

The script does it for you. However, you need to know the correct Access Point Name of your network. It may be airtelgprs.com or www for Hutch or www.e.po for BSNL. Just put in the APN in the space for number to dial.

Here are the detailed instructions for OS X. Download your modem script and put it in the folder Library/Modem Scripts. Open Network Preferences. Click and hold the Location pulldown and select “New location.” — call it “GPRS”. Select Show Bluetooth Serial Port or USB Serial Port, depending on which you are using.

Select the PPP tab and enter the name of your service provider. Enter in “Telephone Number” the APN provided by your network. Leave Username and Password blank. Press PPP Options and make sure ‘Send PPP echo packets’ is NOT selected. Before you can connect, select your modem by clicking on the relevant modem tab in Network Preferences. Windows Users Safari has just been released for Windows too.

You can try out the beta version from www.apple.com/safari. You will find it is several times faster than Internet Explorer and Firefox. However, since it is a trial version, there are still some bugs that have to be ironed out. Send in your computer- related problems to askdoss@abpmail.com The solutions will appear soon.
